Discussing Your Christian Convictions.

by | Posted October 25th at 9:13am

Christians often get flustered, aggressive, or tongue-tied during discussions because they feel pressured to convert people or win debates on the spot. I gently ask you to think deeply about your own assumptions as we assess specific objections and logic flaws.

I would like you to define your terms, as I have heard these arguments before when folks distort, exaggerate, or oversimplify a truth to make it easier to attack or refute a Christian’s belief.

Assessing Specific Objections & Logic Flaws

Nonbeliever Retort / Argument Please Think This Over.
“There is no specific truth” or “All religions are equally true.” Think: The statement defeats itself. I ask: “Is that statement true?” If there is no one specific truth, then your claim cannot be true either. This claim asserts an absolute truth while denying the existence of absolute truth. If you meant there is no definitive truth, then your absolute truth exists (and your claim is false). If you say “All religions are equally true”, then many truths, which often deny other truths, do not discount that one absolute truth can still exist, such as a fact about atomic physics: E=MC2
“Who are you to judge? You shouldn’t force your moral views on anyone!” Think: “If nobody should push their morals, aren’t you pushing your moral view on me right now? Are you judging me right now for making a moral claim? Isn’t telling me not to present my view judging a rule that you are forcing on me?”
“You’re narrow-minded for saying Jesus is the only way.” Think: “I’m just agreeing with Jesus in John 14:6. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Do you think Jesus was mistaken?”
“I don’t believe in God because there’s so much evil in the world.” Think: “Where do you get your concept of ‘evil’? Doesn’t ‘evil’ require an objective moral standard of ‘good’?” “What scientific experiment or empirical test proved that statement to you?” Do you realize that the Bible says God is against evil and seeks good for all mankind?
“Evolution explains everything. We don’t need a Creator.” Think: “Do you think that 1. evolution explains how the universe originated, or 2. how biological life developed once matter existed?” What scientific experiment or empirical test proved that statement to you? Like him or hate him, even Elon Musk admits that there must be a Creator, given the universe’s design.
“The Bible was written by men, so it’s flawed.” Think: “Which specific passages do you find historically inaccurate, and what evidence leads you to that conclusion? What scientific experiment or empirical test proved that statement to you?”
“You’re just a narrow-minded bigot!” Think: “I would like to pause and hear your take, but insulting my character doesn’t show why my argument is wrong. Can we focus on reasoning together?”

If you have several major issues with the Bible or Jesus Christ, pick your strongest objection and let’s discuss it first. You may have fair questions. Please email your questions to: glenjackman@graceproclaimed.org

Logistics check: Some may think that “All truth is relative to each individual’s perspective.” This is making a universal claim about the nature of all truth. I ask: Is that a relative truth, true only for you, or an objective truth that applies to everyone? Please think about both sides of the question.
